First
MUZI in Congress to Speak at CAIR Event
Washington, D.C. 10 Nov 06 ~ The Council on American-Islamic
Relations (CAIR) announced today that Keith Ellison, the first
Moslem in Congress, will join other elected officials as a
keynote speaker November 18th at the Washington-based civil
rights groups 12th Annual Banquet in Arlington, Va.
CAIRs dinne
r,
which in past years had sold-out crowds of more than 1,000, will
feature addresses by Representative-elect Ellison (D-MN) and Reps.
Elijah Cummings (D-MD), Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) and Albert Wynn
(D-MD).
Other speakers at the event include a representative of the FBI
and Amy Goodman of Democracy Now. Attendees will include many
Moslem and interfaith leaders, diplomats from Moslem nations and
American Moslem community activists.
Ellison won Tuesdays election in Minnesotas 5th
Congressional District by a more than two-to-one margin. He will
be the first American Moslem to hold elected office at the
national level.
We are honored to have the first American Moslem elected to
Congress offer his first major address during our annual banquet,
said CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad.

Journalist Joel Mowbray has been virtually the only journalist
who has pursued this connection, exploring in a recent column
Mr. Ellisons seemingly tight connection with Nihad
Awad, co-founder of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR),
whom he met almost two decades ago at the University of Minnesota.
Mowbray reports that Mr. Awad headlined a fundraiser last
month that the campaign estimates netted $15,000 to $20,000, and
in July, and it appears that CAIRs co-founder bundled
contributions totaling just over $10,000. (The campaign issued a
terse denial on the latter point, though it refused to explain
away overwhelming evidence to the contrary.) Faced with
this evidence, Ellisons backers have attempted to
paint attacks on the candidate as overtly partisan or even
bigoted. A Minneapolis Star Tribune columnist, for example,
recently suggested that Mr. Ellison is under attack solely for
being Moslem.
What is so troubling about Ellisons connection with Awad
and CAIR? Mowbray quotes the assessments of two leading Democrats:
Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois has declared that CAIR is
unusual in its extreme rhetoric and its association with groups
that are suspect. New York Senator Charles Schumer, once
said that CAIR has ties to terrorism and that
Ellisons supporter Awad has intimate connections with
Hamas. Mowbray establishes the latter point from
Awads own mouth, quoting his 1994 statement: Im
in support of the Hamas movement.
CFPA: This man is a
Black Racist, Louis Farrakhan and Hamas supporter. He is up to
his elbows in support of terrorists. He is now the head terrorist
supporter in the United States Congress.
God help us!
