Toronto- 27 June 2004 ~ An estimated one million people lined the streets of Toronto to watch the city's annual gay Pride parade pass in a riot of color, thongs, leather and near nudity. The parade, the world's third largest Pride event, was the climax of a week of festivities which included a "Dyke March" for lesbians on Saturday.
It attracted gay and lesbian couples, gay rights activists, families, and tourists. Michael Gill and Michelle Urbano, both 34, took their 2½-year-old daughter Maya to the parade. "I think we should expose her to all kinds of different things, and show her what Canadian culture is all about," said Urbano.

Marchers sporting bizarre costumes, leather, chains and even angels wings delighted thousands of people lining roves of buildings along the parade route. One man, wearing only his underpants cart wheeled down the road, while another tiptoed painfully along in high heeled leather boots -- and little else.
"Everyone's welcome in our city, and Pride is a celebration of respect for everybody," Toronto mayor David Miller told local CP-24 television. This year's parade took place just a day before a general election which has sparked fears that a win by the opposition Conservative party could threaten gay marriage. The current centrist Liberal government has asked the Supreme Court to decide whether the Charter of Rights and Freedoms is violated by the definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
The issue evenly divides Canadians, according to polls, with the more conservative residents of the Western plains vehemently against gay marriage. Provinces of Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia have allowed homosexual marriages, sparking a national debate.
Other cities holding crowd-drawing parades Sunday included Atlanta, Seattle and New York, where gay pride parade-goers danced down Fifth Avenue and waved rainbow flags in celebration.
CFPA: Gay pride? Queers prancing down city streets in broad daylight almost naked and in nothing more than jock straps and underpants....that's pride? You can be sure that Satan is proud of these parades but no decent person would. The CFPA will work diligently to get these public displays of filth, perversion and indecency banned from the United States. It is absolutely shameful to allow this abuse of freedom to continue in our beloved country.
